“I’ve still got it,” Amanda told Ryan happily the moment he answered the phone, his greeting audible through the speakers of her Mercedes, since she was making the call hands-free. Before leaving her office, she had donned her sunglasses against the early-afternoon glare and stocked her center console with cold water and a protein bar in anticipation of the hour-long ride to Kerrville.

“I take it the appointment with your out-of-town customers went well,” Ryan said, sounding amused.

“Better than well. They weren’t initially looking for waterfront property, but I couldn’t resist talking them into an impulse drive-by—or at least I pretended that I hadn’t planned it—of a beautiful two-story that just came on the market. Once they saw the gorgeous view of the river from the back porch and the husband got a load of the primo outdoor kitchen, he was a goner. But it took seeing the upstairs sleeping loft with all its bunkbeds, and my helping the wife imagine how excited all their grandchildren would be to come stay there, to finally convince her they’d regret it forever if they didn’t take this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

“And you accused me of not fighting fair. Sounds like you would’ve made a pretty decent youngest child yourself.” He chuckled warmly. “So what’s the plan now? Heading out to your house to check on our progress with the graffiti? Because I can tell you, Mac, your new sidekick Frio and I just left the place looking a whole lot better.”

As she passed the small shops, grocery store and old limestone courthouse that made up the tiny community’s downtown, a warm feeling had her smiling. “That’s so great to hear, thanks. You’re finished for the day?”

“We’ll probably head back over tomorrow morning and knock out the rest,” he said. “But Mac had to leave to take Sara for a routine checkup with her obstetrician, so I thought I’d take care of a couple of handyman jobs over at the resort until they make it back here.”

“Oh, yes,” Amanda said, remembering that, like her attorney, Sara’s doctor also had her office in the larger Hill Country community of Kerrville, to the northwest. “She mentioned Mac’s insisting that she doesn’t drive that far on her own.”

“Can’t blame the man for being cautious,” he said, his somber undertone a reminder of the loss of Mac’s first wife, which had set so much misery into motion.

“Sara tells me the doctor’s reassured them that as long as she keeps an eye on her ankles and follows his instructions, there’s no reason to expect anything but a healthy outcome.”

“Good, because after everything they’ve been through, she and Mac deserve all the joy the universe can dole out. And the twins are so excited about being a big sister and brother.”

“They’ll be amazing, I’m sure,” she said, smiling at the thought of how Silvia and Cristo had blossomed under their father and Sara’s loving care.

“So what about you?” he asked. “Are you still planning to head over to Kerrville, too?”
